Working with Angles
It’s not as terrifying as you would think!
At David Head Furniture we deal with our fair share of angled and curved walls.
Bespoke Handmade Furniture
When you offer the bespoke handmade furniture service that we do it sort of comes with the territory! A lot of companies are scared off of this type of work. As i have written previously, larger companies thrive on repetition. They want to run forty of the same thing off of a machine without having to change any settings.
With bespoke angled and curved work this is simply not possible. A vast number of houses will either have rooms built into a pitched roof and unless you live in a bungalow you are more than likely going to have a large angled space under the stairs. It can be a difficult space to use properly, but if done right can add a lot of storage to your home in an area that probably wouldnt be of much use for anything else.

Obviously angled work means more than just fitting units under stairs. The unit above is octagonal in shape. Our customer wanted a mix of drawers and small cupboard space, all within a unit she could easily get around from any side. On a side note, check out the grain matching on the draw fronts!!

The units that you see above are three good examples of wardrobes being fitted into angled rooms. They have all been made using minimal infilling to the walls and ceiling to ensure that the most amount of space possible is available. The brighter ones amongst you may have noticed that the handles on the angled doors do not line up in traditional pairs.
This is simply because your hinges always need to be on the tallest side of an angled door, to stop the top of the door hitting the ceiling as you are trying to open it. Its not just the doors that are angled, all the units behind the doors are also angled, in some cases directly to the ceiling.

Devil is in the Detail
When it comes to angled work, the devil really is in the detail and, simply put, it all comes down to the level of detail you go into when measuring up.
When we measure for an angled wardrobe not only do we measure the length or height of each wall, but with the help of a sliding bevel, we can accurately measure the angle at the top and at the bottom, transferring both of these lines onto paper so that they can then be transposed onto our workshop plans.
From there i will then do something that i don’t have to do with regular square work. I will draw out a proper scale workshop rod of the space and a unit. I usually do this on a scrap sheet of material and working with a 1:2 scale. This allows me to accurately plan and then cut all of the angles required.
The good news is, science has made this problem easy-to-solve with some very effective medicines known as anti-impotent medicines. purchase generic cialis The nerves found in male phallus generic levitra canada must be much efficient. When the unit is fully drawn out i can also use the sliding bevel to take all the angles and transpose them straight over to our large table saw. The blade on the table saw will tilt up to a 45 degree angle, allowing me to accurately cut the angled tops of all the units.
Obviously if we are making the doors as well, then they will be manufactured using exactly the same method as i have outlined above. If we ordering in the doors then obviously we want them to match, with most door styles we cannot simply buy a square door and then cut the angle ourselves.
Luckily for us, our amazing friends at BA components offer an angled door service on the majority of their ranges. This is absolutely fantastic for us (and for you!) as it allows us to offer a huge range of doors in all different styles, that can all be angled.

This unit is one of my favourites. This entire unit, believe it or not, was all made and finished completely in the workshop.
Hassle Free Handmade Furniture
All of the front framework was all measured, angled and dry fixed before it even went to the customers home. Because of this, not a single piece needed to be cut on site, meaning all that the fitting staff had to do was work out what piece went where (luckily i provided instructions, because I’m that awesome) and glue it all in place.
This meant that not only were we in and out of the customers home is as little time possible, we also didn’t have to make any mess or noise. I see this working as well as it did a testament to our measurement process. If you take your time, ensure that every size and every angle tallies up and that it all looks right on paper, it will save you a lot of time at the end of the job. I always tell the lads, take an extra hour of planning and you will save yourself three hours fitting. Most of the time this rings very true!!

As a little add on i thought i would share a couple of curved benches i made a little while back. These were for one half of a circular kitchen table, I assume they had something else already organised for the other half!!
I would love to know if anyone out there (not you David!) can work out how these were done. The only hint i will give is that both of the benches were made completely from (shock horror!!) MDF. It really is a very versatile material. If you think you can work out how this was done then i would absolutely love to hear from you. If you contact me and you are wrong but your idea for how to make it is better than mine, you may well have a job opportunity!
If you would like to enquire about an angled piece of handmade furniture then please don’t hesitate to contact David on 01525753737 or at David@davidhead.co.uk or you can reach me if you’re desperate at Tom@davidhead.co.uk!!
This year is filling up fast so don’t wait!!!
