The Oak Bar! Somewhere stylish for a pint?!
So, a little while back we were contacted by our friends at HR projects in London about creating a beautiful and bespoke oak bar for a brand new bowls club in the Horsham area of West Sussex.
A large house building company had bought a large swathe of land which happened to house an old bowls club. As part of the deal to buy the land it was agreed that a new bowls club would be built close to original site.
This was to be a completely state of the art facility, the floor had to be laid completely flat over the entirety of the building to allow for indoors bowls in the winter. The building of the bowls club was sub-contracted by the house builders to HR projects who then contacted us about the bar.

After an initial meeting with both HR projects and with the bowls club committee, David got to work on the design, The idea was that our bar would nestle neatly into a corner of the club, with pre-ordered bespoke seating then running around the rest of the area next to it to create a neat seating area.
While the aesthetics had to right, it was important the bar be functional and easy to use, with plenty of storage and easy to wipe down in case of spillages. We made as much as we possibly could in the workshop and as with any job, had the whole bar built and finished so that we could make sure that fitting would be as straightforward as possible.
Considering the distance away that the job was (about 100 miles, mainly on the M1 and M25) we (mainly David!!) decided to fit over two days. the resulting two days had me leaving the house at 5;30am both days and getting home at 9pm on the first day and 10pm on the second!! As an aside, I feel that navigating the M25 in rush hour with 4.5m of solid oak worktop strapped to the top of your van redefines the word heroic!!

Hopefully you will agree that the finished effect is pretty stunning. All the outside panels you can see at the top and bottom are all cleverly removable to allow access to the barrels and equipment that sat behind the bar. The bar top itself we made using solid oak butcher block worktop and the whole thing was lacquered several times to give a good, tough finish.
How do you get into the bar?? i hear you ask. Well you can’t see it in the photograph but on the right hand side not only was a section of the bar top hinged to allow access but one of the panels was also hinged to act as a door.
We made sure that this door featured the same skirting as the other panels to make it look from the outside to be one seamless, unpeneterable piece of handmade furniture!!
The solid looking posts are actually reinforced steel pillars that we built the bar around and then clad in solid oak and the curved corner was actually a very clever piece of veneering!!

And this is what it looked like behind the bar! a neat mix of open shelving and cupboard space, complete with handy sink! The lower level worktop came from our appollo slabtech range, is completely wipe clean and can even be rebuffed if it gets scratched, absolutely perfect for this type of job.
Behind the scenes there were also neat access points for all of the pipes and other technical gubbins that go into the pouring of a good pint!
If nothing else, hopefully this goes to prove that we really are capable of nearly anything at David Head Furniture and are always more than willing to give anything a try. This was something a little different for us at the time and we loved every minute. At some point i may have to head back down there for a drink so i can say that I’m sitting at the bar that i built!
