Handmade Bespoke Furniture
Welcome to our blog about handmade bespoke furniture.
Timbers of the World – Handmade Bespoke Furniture
Over the course of the last few months this blog on handmade bespoke furniture has looked at all different kinds of furniture, from all different kinds of timber.
I thought it was about time that i actually offered a small amount of insight into the actual woods themselves!
There will probably be more research involved in this blog than in most so I’m hoping it is going to be worth it!!
I personally have worked with a wide range of different timbers over the last 15 years on various handmade bespoke furniture projects.

Whilst i worked for my last employer (a time we don’t talk about here, or if we do it is referred to as ‘the wilderness years’!) I had the chance to work with several different kinds of timber, mainly in veneer form.
Once on a handmade bespoke furniture job, my foreman asked me to raid the veneer store and find as many different kinds of veneer as i could, the powers that be wanted to make a very very large sample board featuring every different type of finish that they could offer.
This was great for me as it meant that i got to learn about it all. Fashions also change.
Over the past 15 years i have seen various timbers come in and out of fashion.
In fact the only timber that has been a constant has been Oak.
When i first started, David and I used to use a lot of pine and beech, I haven’t used either of them regularly in at least the last 10 years.
About 5 years ago we did a lot of handmade bespoke furniture work in Walnut, that has since tailed off again.
We have had a few jobs in Cherry and the odd one in timbers like maple, ash or sapele.
Different timbers can be used for different things.

The majority of hardwoods can be treated and used on outdoor handmade bespoke furniture jobs and are great for making hard wearing furniture with.
Softwoods are often used for painted handmade bespoke furniture or interior woodwork, such as skirting, architraves and doors.
Certain timbers can be easier to machine and work with than others, Some stain and finish better than others and some will move and warp more over time than others.
We are lucky enough to have a fantastic timber supplier for all our handmade bespoke furniture projects.
We have used David Kinns timber merchants in Marston Moretaine for years and years and we have never requested anything that they didn’t have or couldn’t get for us.
When i go over to their yard to hand pick my solid timber, i feel roughly the same as i did when i was a kid and i was let loose in a sweet shop, all those timbers and all of those possibilities!
I have tried to find the best pictures and representations that i can of all of these different types of wood, I think i have
managed to find them all in their unfinished form so that you can get a true idea of what they are all about.
Obviously the majority if not all of these woods can be stained to change the colour of them slightly, but you will see a wide variety of different grains and colours that can be used on any handmade bespoke furniture projects.

Cedar is extremely durable and can be used externally without needing any form of treatment to be applied to it.

So there we have it.
There are definitely a few to be going along with there.
Obviously the prices and availabilities of all of these timbers can vary wildly but i think it is great to have a reference of this sort of thing for any future ideas.
You probably have a wide variety of these timbers in your home already and are completely unaware of it.
It fascinates me how different timbers can react completely differently to certain environments and have to be treated with care and attention whereas other timbers can be thrown around, untreated and will still be absolutely fine.
One of my favourite uses of hardwood is Cedar on exterior cladding.

It starts off a lovely reddish brown colour and when left untreated will become a just as lovely silvery grey, in my opinion a timber shouldn’t be able to do that! When looking through the different types of timber and their uses myself it reinforced for me the idea that so many items and structures that we take for granted have originated from the Earth.
When protected well, forests can replenish themselves at a rate quicker than they are cut down, giving a hopefully endless supply of building materials that are completely natural.
So many materials that are used every day are harmful in someway or have a finite supply, this will hopefully never be the case with timber.
I just hope that we craftsmen can keep persuading people to use it and to use it in ever more creative ways.
Some may disagree with me but i think that the rise of veneers has actually helped the timber industry as it allows a lot of people to use a least some real wood whereas before they would simply have been priced out in favour of laminate faced chipboards and the like.
Veneering itself is a very skilled job and is something that has evolved massively in the last few decades.
I thought i would also show you (or show you again in some cases!) some of our work with a few of these timbers.
This kitchen was made using solid oak framework and oak veneered doors framed with solid walnut This desk was made from sapelle, lacquered up to give a beautiful reddish finish.

This huge free standing wardrobe was made from cherry. This has been oiled for a slightly more natural feel.
You can see the nice leg work which was possible as cherry is such a nice timber to work!
This bedside table (part of a pair, as well as a chest of drawers and dressing table) was made from poplar and then stained dark.
This freestanding sideboard was made from Chestnut.
Chestnut has a lot of the same properties as oak but tends to be slightly creamier in its natural colour and is less dense.
This was stained to match a customer’s existing furniture.
You can see how we have cleverly incorporated lighting without a single visible cable, This sideboard was made from oak.
The units themselves are made from veneer with all of the front work (framework, doors, drawers, posts etc) being made from solid timber, using veneers for the units takes a lot off of both the price and the weight in comparison to having the whole thing made from solid timber.
This cinema room (as well as a piece i will forever be envious of) is made from walnut with a smattering of painted elements.
When lacquered walnut retains this beautiful dark brown colour with some gorgeous grain patterns in various shades of brown or even black.
Hopefully there are some people out there who love timber and real wood finishes as much as i do who may have found this to be an informative piece or even just some of you who are considering having a piece of furniture made but don’t know what to have it made from.
Hopefully this blog can give you a bit of a reference point and help you to narrow down exactly what it is that you are looking for.

Handmade Bespoke Furniture – 25 Marvellously Modern Kitchens
Something that we pride ourselves on at David Head Furniture is clever design and in using all of the amount of available space to create something that is beautiful to look at but also customer friendly and fulfills all of your storage requirements.
These things are extremely important when you are talking about having a new kitchen.
The kitchen is invariably the most used room in the home, people congregate there, either to queue for their dinner or to stand drinking wine whilst getting in the way of the chef.

Having a new kitchen can be an extremely expensive thing to do, so it is important that you get it right first time.
Away from the finished look of your kitchen, it is even more important to make sure that all of your appliances are where you want them and that you have as many drawers or shelves as needed.
You have the option to use clever pull-out storage ideas and all manner of clever inserts, designed to make your kitchen easier to use.
At David Head Furniture we take this process extremely seriously.

Locking in the design is, for us, the most important part of the process. Kitchens themselves, when broken down into their relative components, are normally relatively simple to make, the hard part is the working out and making sure that every piece of space is used. David uses a program called ‘ArtiCad’.
This very clever piece of software allows us to not only design your kitchen using all of the relevant sizes and specifications, but also allows us to show you several 3D renderings of how your finished kitchen will look like, allowing you to properly visualize your kitchen and make any changes you would like to make before the production process begins.
There are several different styles of kitchen that you can go for and it can be a daunting task searching through hundreds of different styles and colours of door.

This is before you even think about things like worktops, handles and lighting.
You can go traditional or ultra modern, you can have handleless rail or the biggest handles that you can find!
I thought i would continue my series of ’25’s’ by looking at some different types of kitchen.
I thought i would start with the modern looking kitchen.
A lot of these kitchens will feature high gloss flat doors and a lack of handles. with sleek and sometimes shiny worktops and clever pull out options.
A lot of modern kitchens are actually designed to be as unobtrusive as possible, whilst others are designed to be flashy and to stand out from the crowd.

The common theme with the most modern kitchen can be confined to a single word.
That word is ‘flat’. The doors tend to be flat, the end panels and worktops, completely flat.
The lack of mouldings is what can give a kitchen that ultra modern look.
More traditional kitchens may have mouldings on the doors, chamfers on the edges, even a full framework around all of the doors and drawers.
Modern kitchens are designed around unbroken lines, clean finishes and sharper edges.
Here are 25 of the best modern styled kitchens i could find.
They vary in design and specification but all deliver on style and presentation.

My favourite modern kitchens feature light coloured doors that are broken up with a different colour door at various points.
This could be done using a single door along a large span or even by using different coloured doors and end panels on the wall and larder units.
This is actually a good point to remind you of the kitchen we made that won the BA components award for best kitchen over £15k. The kitchen that we built featured handleless rail, stone and copper effect finish doors and a lot of straight lines!
You can see here how well using two different colours can work and how well the handleless rail system works.
By adding simple but well designed appliances like the hob in the picture above and an undermounted sink you can easily create a very clever and effective modern kitchen.

Handmade Bespoke Furniture – Who needs a lie down??
It would appear that it has reached the part of the week when I’ve had enough of building handmade bespoke furniture, and all i really want to do is curl up in a little ball and cry myself to sleep (normally this is at about 8:15 on a monday morning so i must be having a decent week).
As nice as it is to be as busy as we are, we are already starting to fret about getting all handmade bespoke furniture ready for people before christmas, we know that the long afternoons and driving home in the dark are coming soon!
I had to actually de-ice the van for the first time a couple of days ago, an act which makes me wish that i had never gotten out of bed in the first place.
Also due to the size of my van it takes so long to warm up that i normally start feeling my fingers again just as i get to the workshop, where it is cold all over again. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT

I find it so much harder getting out of bed in the mornings when it’s dark and cold outside.
As i get up a little before my wife i try my hardest to disturb her as little as possible.
This includes not turning on any lights in the bedroom.
On the surface this seems like a great idea but i have lost count of how many times i’ve walked straight into the end of the bed or fallen through the en suite door, a door which seems to move around in the dark, and in the morning isn’t where i thought it was the night before.
After that i stagger out onto the landing and trip over at least 2 if not all 3 of our cats whilst fumbling for the lightswitch, swear as quietly as possible and try and find whichever poor cat i have just accidentally kicked halfway down the stairs.
All of my clothes are in the spare room, again so i do not accidentally fall over whilst putting my trousers on in my bedroom (and also because as we know, my wife has full ownership over the wardrobe in the main bedroom) and clatter into my soundly sleeping other half. Once dressed i stagger aimlessly around for a while trying to locate the stairs, which although fully illuminated at this point are still littered with various pets who all delight in running around my ankles at the most inopportune of moments.
More than once i’ve ended up coming down the stairs on my backside, mainly to ensure that i don’t end up coming down them head first. Once this unbelievably difficult task is completed, it’s out the back door and a short stagger to the van.
I slap myself a couple of times in hopes of waking myself up enough to drive and then off i go.
This is basically a long winded way of saying that i hate having to leave my bed when i don’t want to.
For this i resent many people including my mortgage company, David and John Barrowman (don’t ask me why, its a long running joke that he gets blamed for everything that goes wrong in my house).
Obviously the one small speck of light in an otherwise total mess of a situation is that it’s given me a blog idea.
That idea being that there are an awful lot of very cleverly designed and beautiful handmade bespoke furniture out there. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT

Some are just very pretty to look at whilst others contain amazing amounts of very clever storage.
You can find beds with bedside tables built in, beds with multiple draws underneath or bunk beds that manage to fit in a desk and sometimes even a wardrobe.
I thought i would have a little look at a few different types of these beds whilst highlighting some of the ideas that make them either clever or just very nice to look at.
All the handmade bespoke furniture you are about to see is something that we can make for you, so if you have a slightly odd space to fill, need a lot of storage or simply want to create a Superbed that features two kingsize mattresses next to each other then please do give us a shout.
I thought i would start with 5 relatively simple beds below. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT

Although they are all in slightly different styles, they are all made from solid timber and will be extremely strong.
It is important to use the right joints on a bed, and in that regard at times is more of a traditional joinery job than a cabinet making one, all inclusive in our handmade bespoke furniture packages.
These beds range from the very traditional to the very modern and are simple and well designed pieces.
Exquisite Handmade bespoke furniture

Handmade bespoke furniture with minimal style
The next group of five beds are similar to the ones above but feature different storage methods either underneath or around the bed frame.
Having drawers underneath the bed is the most effective and most common method for adding storage to your bedroom.
Another method is to build shelving either to the sides or at the end of the bed.
Most bedrooms are long enough that the bed will fit easily, giving ample room to walk around the end of the bed.
Why not use some of that space for storage?
In my own bedroom i built a shelving unit at the end of my bed that would house a lot of DVD’s.
The top of this unit was built to be the same height as the end of the bed, giving somewhere handy to perch a television.
I particularly like this bed as it cleverly uses all of the space available underneath the mattress by having the frame on springs, therefore allowing it to be lifted for access to the storage space.
Functional handmade bespoke furniture
This bed somehow manages to incorporate an entirely separate bed, as well as draw space underneath the original bed.
The small downside here is that the mattress sits quite high up off of the floor, but once your partner has given you a lift up it doesn’t really make a huge difference!
Handmade bespoke furniture with storage
This bed features possibly the most amount of storage possible!
You have matching bedside units as well as shelving in the headboard and at the end. As well as that you have multiple drawers underneath.
You may need a sizable bedroom but if you are lucky enough to be able to house this bed it would make a very handy addition to all of those people with a shopping addict for a wife! CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT

Moving away from the more grown up styles of beds i thought i would also look at some great solutions for making the most of the space available in a child’s bedroom.
Kids bedrooms tend to be smaller than the master bedroom and therefore making the most of the space is very important.
Often you need to fit a bed, a wardrobe, maybe a desk and a chest of drawers all into a relatively small space.
The following examples would be what you would describe as ‘cabin’ beds and are basically a bunk bed without the bottom bed.
When i was younger i had a bed that had a sofa on the bottom half.
This would then pull out to a double bed if and when i wanted it to.
The upshot of this was that i regularly fell asleep on the sofa part whilst watching the telly, forcing my Dad to creep into the room and turn everything off, long after i’d fallen asleep.
Childrens handmade bespoke furniture
This bed above it probably my favourite bed ever.
I would quite happily have a bed like this now.
I fear however that the bottom would have to be a lot more reinforced than it was when i was younger (and a lot littler!!). CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT

Childrens handmade bespoke furniture
For the final group of beds i thought i would focus on those among you who are lucky enough to have several charming little poppets clogging up your home, monopolising the wi-fi and leaving trails of dirty clothes all over the house.
There are some brilliant solutions for housing multiple children in a relatively small space!
These are more traditional bunk beds, but a lot of them still feature clever storage solutions.
This bed above is particular clever as they have not only managed to incorporate drawers underneath the bed but also some rather large drawers inside the staircase up to the top bunk.
Handmade bespoke furniture at its best
I love this design as it has actually created both a bed and seating area all in one.
By taking up one wall of this room they have also managed to cleverly work in several shelves as well as lighting built into each section.
I don’t even want to think about how many children this family would have, imagine if they had more than one room kitted out like this!!
As you can see there are several relatively simple solutions if you are looking for somewhere comfortable to spend your nights whilst giving yourself the most amount of usable space possible.
As much as i would love to have been able to write this blog from bed, i can only at this point daydream about the possibility that at some point in the next 12 hours i will be allowed to return to sleep! All of these beds would be easily made in virtually any timber and finish that you can think of.

HANDMADE BESPOKE FURNITURE
Handmade bespoke furniture – That’s not just a gap in the wall, that’s an alcove
Good afternoon lovely readers, we have a great handmade bespoke furniture blog for you today.
I had a little look and i realized that i haven’t put a blog on handmade bespoke furniture up in some time.
How could i possibly have let you down like that you ask? I worry that many of you have been out there, on the edge of your computer chairs, checking every day in vain for more of my demented ramblings.
For this i can only apologise.
My absence can be explained by the fact that we’ve been extremely busy making handmade bespoke furniture (I’m still not happy that we ever get busy enough for me to actually have to do anything but there you go).
I also had a week off (i couldn’t believe i was allowed it either).
The week off was fantastic and for once i didn’t have a laundry list of things to do around the house.
I sat, i ate, i sat a bit more, i ate a bit more, i laid down, i went to London for a day, i laid down more……you get the point.
So relaxed was i that i only spoke to David once about what was going on in my absence.
Normally when i go away i spend a little time making sure everyone knows what’s going on with each job.
That the lads have plenty of handmade bespoke furniture work to be going on with, without having to bother the boss and that basically everything will continue to run smoothly.
This effort is normally met with a sarcastic comment from David about me thinking that this place doesn’t work without me, blah blah blah. I normally laugh this off but you and i know the truth……!
This slightly enforced break has enabled me to come up with some new ideas about what kind of handmade bespoke furniture blog to cover.
When i took over the handmade bespoke furniture blog there seemed to be so many ideas that i couldn’t get them out quick enough but it’s been a few months now and it’s getting harder.
If anyone would like to suggest a handmade bespoke furniture blog idea.
Or a subject that you would like to know more about then it would really help and stop my head hurting quite as much as it does sometimes.
Something that we do a lot of at David Head furniture is working with odd spaces and angles.
We make an awful lot of handmade bespoke furniture units that are designed to fit perfectly into existing alcoves in people’s homes.
I think the reason for this is that everyone’s house can be different and therefore the alcoves are different.
This makes it nearly impossible to find a unit off the shelf that will fit the gap you need it to, hence the need to get the professionals in to make some handmade bespoke furniture.
Here is a great example of a pair of alcove units.
The majority of handmade bespoke furniture alcoves that we work with are situated in the living rooms of older homes and are pretty much always in pairs, situated around a chimney breast.
A lot of people have a fireplace surround to match as well. Because of their situation, handmade bespoke furniture alcove units often need to be able to hold a television and all the related equipment that comes with it.
You can just build a full height bookcase within the alcove, something we have also done but more often people are looking for the arrangement above.
Low level units with doors offer great storage and will be made at a height that is perfect to put a television on.
A bookcase above with open shelving is then a lovely way to store and display books and ornaments.
Obviously any handmade bespoke furniture unit can be made out of almost any material.
What makes an handmade bespoke furniture unit tricky, and therefore work for professionals such as ourselves, is that it needs to be perfectly designed and fitted so that it is as efficient and nice to look at as possible. This can mean careful scribing of infills to walls right through to cutting around angles and even radiators.
As alcove units tend to be manufactured for older homes. they tend to be in a more traditional style, a lot of framework, panelled doors, heavy cornice etc.
When finishing, more of the handmade bespoke furniture units that we make tend to be hand painted rather than spray painted, this not only makes the unit look more traditional but also makes it easier to paint the unit in on site.
I have gathered a few lovely examples of alcove units.

Modern handmade bespoke furniture
You can see throughout the pictures that although there are various materials and colours used, the general designs are very similar.
The great thing about alcove units made in this way is that they don’t encroach into the room at all.
Some may feature lower handmade bespoke furniture units that come out a little further than the alcove, but not by much.
Here now are a few handmade bespoke furniture units that we have made recently. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT handmade bespoke furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP
Including a nice little lower level unit made from oak, although this didn’t have a bookcase above it i thought it was worth showing you as it not only features an angled front.
But this handmade bespoke furniture piece was also made to fit into an alcove that had exposed brick work to two faces and a rendered wall to the other face.
Handmade bespoke furniture to fit any space
This last one is a great example of a full height bookcase in one alcove and a handmade bespoke furniture unit build around the television in the other alcove.
What we actually did here was to have the tv attached to a removable panel.
We cut a hole in this panel which is then covered by the television, this allowed all the cabling to be neatly hidden and then run into the lower level unit which housed the dvd player and sky box. By doing this handmade bespoke furniture unit this way we have hidden all of the wires whilst still making them totally accessible.
So there we are, a small case study on the workings and applications of the alcove unit.
Personally they are some of my favourite things to make as they tend to not be the longest of jobs, feature a lot of different processes and methods and are just more interesting to make than other things.
My only annoyance is that my own house doesn’t have any alcoves!!
If you would like to enquire about having some alcove units made for your own home then please don’t hesitate to contact David on 01525 753737 or at david@davidhead.co.uk As always thanks for reading. 25 Magnificent Media Units – handmade bespoke furniture
Good afternoon lovely readers, or as I suspect more accurately, good afternoon to several members of my friends and family who i force to read this handmade bespoke furniture blog! Honestly, i test them occasionally by asking them questions about my latest blog and if they can’t answer me correctly i shun them for a predetermined length of time. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT handmade bespoke furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP
Who is the real winner there however? I shall leave that up to you.
So first up i should say that my last blog turned out to be a huge huge mistake.
There i was, thinking i was being as hilarious as ever whilst recounting tales of my wife’s shopping habits (which to be fair a few people did find at least amusing in passing).
Little did i know the whirlwind that i had unleashed.
I can now confirm that the back of my van is not a particularly comfortable place to sleep (however roomy it may be) and if you stand banging on a front door shouting ‘I’m so sorry, we can go shopping whenever you like’ for long enough, you scare your neighbours and end up getting taken away by the local constabulary. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT handmade bespoke furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP
To be fair to the police, they read the blog and thought it was funny so who am i to argue?!
I have been allowed back into the house on the condition that i state here for the record that my wife is beautiful, funny, clever and wise, and that she’s always always right and that i’m an idiot, a huge huge idiot. It truly is amazing what a couple of nights in the back of a Vauxhall Vivaro can do to a man, and to several vertebrae for that matter.
So, it has actually been a little while since I’ve had time for a new blog.
We’ve been so busy that i have actually been forced back into the workshop and onto site (i know, the cheek of it).
There are some lovely handmade bespoke furniture pictures up on the David Head Furniture facebook page of what we’ve been up to recently. Luckily for me, the lads have returned from larging it up (i couldn’t get away with that phrase when i was 20, goodness knows why i thought i could get away with it now, at 30) at Creamfields festival this weekend (Alex walked in this morning looking like a zombie and Ollie has some of the funniest sunburn i’ve ever seen in my life) and so they have taken back over, allowing me to get back into the office to blog and to roll around on my chair again.
It’s lovely to be back! The last blog i posted was titled ’25 wonderful wardrobes’ or something like that so i thought i would continue the theme (i could pretend that i had a whole series planned before i started but that would be a lie, i did the wardrobes one and realised that i had unwittingly created a load of easy blogs for myself, it’s a simple formula, waffle on for a bit to get the word count up and then just add a load of photos, easy!) The next piece of furniture i will be focusing on is the media unit.
With televisions get larger and larger and more and more of us stockpiling series boxsets like rations before a hurricane, it seemed apt to focus on. We have noticed that we have been getting increasingly more orders for media units over the past few years and have been lucky enough to be able to make some lovely handmade bespoke furniture pieces.
I thought that i would again collect a group of 25 of my favourite units found during my web based research (you know, when i wasn’t looking up sports results).
I think the word count is probably high enough now to make sure everyone thinks that i have done enough writing to substantiate the amount of time i’ve been in the office for, so here we are, enjoy some more handmade bespoke furniture!

I had to check way too many times then that i actually had 25 pictures, i literally checked it 3 times.
I could still be wrong! Hopefully you can see from the pictures of handmade bespoke furniture above that there are so many stylish and clever ideas for what to do with or around your television.
It is amazing the amount of storage you can create.
You can make a unit for your TV to simply sit on or you can build some handmade bespoke furniture that’s big and impressive for it to sit within. It is very easy to simply plonk the TV down somewhere and not really be able to do too much with the space around or behind it. Virtually every one of these handmade bespoke furniture designs is not only stylish but provides elegant solutions for hiding all of the wires and cables and plugs that come with media equipment.
When we make a media unit, one of the first thoughts is how are we going to hide all of the ugly cabling whilst still leaving it accessible and easy to connect up. As ever, i hope that this may give some of you an idea of some handmade bespoke furniture that you would like for your own home.
If you would like to speak to David about having a magnificent media unit (always get the title in again!!) made for your home then please don’t hesitate to contact us. You can reach David at david@davidhead.co.uk or on 01525753737.

Time to put my money where my mouth is – Time to make some handmade bespoke furniture with the offcuts!
So another blog about handmade bespoke furniture. David is on holiday, and has been for most of the past two weeks.
It’s been absolutely blissful. It’s been quiet, we’ve averaged about 2 hours of work a day (just kidding….. it’s more like an hour and a half), we’ve all spent most of the time drunk and or asleep and in short I have spent the last two weeks being David!
As i write this i am taking regular breaks to do nothing more than amble into the workshop, tut at something that the lads are doing, shake my head slightly and walk back into the office without saying a word.
It’s actually a very fun game and i hope that it worries them as much as it does when David does it to me.
When i get back into the office i spin around on the chair a few times and write another sentence before repeating the whole thing. This blog post on handmade bespoke furniture has already taken 4 hours.
On a completely unrelated note England are currently 132 for 5 in the cricket. Not that I’m watching it, obviously.
So on one of our recent hour and a half long days i decided that we weren’t going to do any of the work David had left (we are planning on working for 48 hours straight this weekend to catch up).
Instead i decided that it was time that i stopped talking about making some handmade bespoke furniture from offcuts and actually do it (although you may remember that the colourful book based signpost that was made for the pallet blog was some handmade bespoke furniture i had made myself). The idea was that i was going to take a few offcuts of different woods and turn them into some cool handmade bespoke furniture, giving a step by step guide incase any of you budding woodworkers wanted to give it a go yourself.
After a long design meeting, several hours spent designing and another long meeting i decided to make a batch of coasters!
Here is the end product (I’m showing it to you at the beginning because the first picture that i load onto any blog post automatically becomes the main picture on the menu page and i want it to look as pretty as possible and not just a few random pieces of wood!!)
Right, time for the step by step guide!!
CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT handmade bespoke furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP
Step 1- Here are the offcuts! These are un-planed at the moment. We have a mix of oak, chestnut, walnut and sapele.
Step 2- Here they are all planed up.
They have all been finished at the same thickness and a straight edge has been planed on to one edge of each piece so that it can
then be run against the guide on the push through saw and remain straight.
Step 3- To keep the coasters looking as random as possible, each board of timber was cut into strips of varying widths, We had more oak than we did walnut for instance so the walnut was cut into thinner strips.
These strips varied in width from 6mm to 20mm, whilst all staying at the same thickness of 16mm. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT handmade bespoke furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP
Step 4- After a quick google search to find out the average size of a coaster (!) we decided on finishing them at 90mm x 90mm.
The thinking here is that they would be a good size to be used on their own but then could also be used with a smaller and thinner coaster on top.
You can see in this picture that we have arranged the strips into groups, with each group featuring a random selection of the cut strips, making sure that there was a decent amount of each timber in each group.
The sizes of these groups totalled about 600mm long by 95-100mm wide.
Leaving extra on the width is done so that once it is all glued, you can straighten the edges again on the saw and end up at your desired width.
Step 5- All clamped up.
So that we can glue them all up at once we arranged 3 groups per 4 clamps.
Each set is all glued up using our expandable glue (see the products that we use blog for details) and were left for an hour to dry.
During this time we made a cup of tea and had a nap. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT handmade bespoke furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP
Step 6- Once we’d woken up we unclamped them, chiseled the excess glue off and ran them all back through the thicknesser to flatten them off.
We then ran them through the drum sander (although you can do exactly the same with a handheld orbital sander, it just takes a little longer) to get them nice and flat and to sand out any of planer marks in them.
Step 7- Cutting them to size.
To get all four sides neatly cut and to keep the coasters perfectly square we first set up the saw at 93mm and ran them through with the grain.
They were then turned round and run through again at 90mm, giving two straight edges. We then turned them 90 degrees to cut them against the grain.
With the strips held against the saw arm you first take off a little at the end to square it up and then continue running them at 90mm against the saw arm until you run out of wood! CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT handmade bespoke furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP
Step 8- Stand and look at them! Only kidding, these are laid out ready to be individually sanded on the edges and have all the arises sanded off before hoovering them off and preparing them for the spray booth.
Step 9- In the spray booth we gave them a coat of undercoat lacquer and then (with a light sand in between) a top coat in 10% sheen transparent lacquer.
Obviously the chances of the amateur woodworking having access to a full functional spray booth are slim, but you can finish them just as nicely and as easily using a finishing oil or varnish.
Step 10- Put them into neat piles!
When i get a chance to pop to Hobbycraft (i get very excited there, not least because they ha
ve a haberdashery and its about the greatest word ever) i plan to buy a nice twine of ribbon to tie around them as nice little sets.
As you can see, with relatively small offcuts we managed to make a large amount of coasters, i think we have 8 sets of 4 with a couple spare.
This is a really nice way to use your off cuts if you have time and i hope that none of my family and friends (who all read this blog religiously obviously) are surprised when they all receive these for christmas!!
Hopefully a few of you are looking at this and thinking that you could give it a go yourselves.
If you do, we’d love to hear how you get on. As nice as it is to write about other people making things from off cuts , its great to have a go at it ourselves.
Incidentally its now 200 for 5 in the cricket……………..

Whoever said that handmade bespoke furniture had to go inside??
So here is my latest blog on handmade bespoke furniture.
Last week i was on holiday. Normally when i decide to have some time off (by this i mean that i’ve finally found where David keeps the key to the workshop and i manage to escape) it snows in the middle of July or my wife has a hilariously long list of jobs that need doing around the house. Not this time however!!
The unusual thing about this break for me was the fact that the weather was unbelievable from start to finish, there were several barbeques and i spent way too much time burning to a crisp after falling asleep in my back garden.
Whilst dozing on a sun lounger one afternoon, and in between sending motivating pictures of my beer to the lads who were back in the workshop, i got to thinking about handmade bespoke furniture (i literally have nothing else in my life).
The thought i had was simple, do people have pieces of handmade bespoke furniture made for their garden?
When i (or more accurately my wife) wanted some new handmade bespoke furniture for the back garden we went straight to B&Q………. and then Homebase………. and then the Range……… and then Dunelm………… and then back to B&Q………. and then i had a lie down with a cold flannel on my forehead.
When i started actually looking into it i found that people do indeed have handmade bespoke furniture pieces made for thier gardens.
Whether it is a nice table and chairs or some handmade bespoke furniture that is a little more involved, gardens can have j
ust as many odd openings and spaces as your house can.
The variety of ideas and timbers used really surprised me.
A lot of pieces were designed to incorporate plants, some handmade bespoke furniture to incorporate decking and others to work around bigger outdoor structures.
As i do occasionally, i thought i would put together a collection of the best handmade bespoke furniture that i have found.
There are some great handmade bespoke furniture ideas here that have all been beautifully designed and made.
If you are looking for some handmade bespoke furniture to really finish off your garden space then why not let us make something bespoke and lasting for you.

I think you will agree that these are not your typical pieces of handmade bespoke furniture for the garden and are certainly not the type of thing you will find at B&Q.
We focus so much on making handmade bespoke furniture for the inside of peoples homes that it is very easy to forget the outside! All different types of timber, all types of finish and for all types of garden, its very interesting to see what can be done with handmade bespoke furniture.

WHERE DID ALL THE OFF CUTS GO?!
We get through a lot of wood in the process of building handmade bespoke furniture.
We bring it in in large lengths, all different widths and sizes. Some of it’s long, some short, some thick, some thin, some dark and some light (have i made it sound enough like an old fairytale yet?!)
When creating handmade bespoke furniture, you will always end up with the same thing, bits left over!
These bits normally annoy the life out of me, a lot of them are too small to actually use for anything but too big to feel happy throwing them away.
Honestly, there are pieces of timber in the storage space upstairs that has been up there for years.
We keep it thinking ‘we’ll use that on some handmade bespoke furniture project’ and then never do.
The reason for this post is because i was upstairs earlier and the pile of offcuts was getting my blood pressure up. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT handmade bespoke furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP
It did make me think however.
Occasionally when i get a little time spare and i have a decent idea (i average roughly one a year at this point) i might use some of these offcuts and turn them into handmade bespoke furniture for my home or garden.
That was until recently when my eternally long suffering and amazingly beautiful (she says she reads this blog, this will be the test!) wife asked me very kindly to, and i quote, “stop *rude word* bringing wooden things home!!”
What it made me think is that there must be other geniuses (yes i went there, although i really hope that geniuses is a word!) out there who are making wonderfully artistic and functional handmade bespoke furniture with wood that would normally be destined for the bonfire.
These people would be just like me, intelligent, witty, under appreciated in their own time, handsome (ok, I’m reaching now) and have way too much time on their hands!
So, these are the handmade bespoke furniture things that i’ve found, all made by people armed only with a lot of small pieces of wood and a dream!!
Surely there must be enough handmade bespoke furniture ideas there to keep the average hobby woodworker going for several years?!
It always amazes me just how much you can make from relatively very little.
Continuing the theme that i set when talking about using old pallets in a previous blog, one man’s rubbish can definitely be another man’s treasure. If you had the time and inclination there are very few limits to what you can make.
Some handmade bespoke furniture of the projects above are very basic, a few would take years of collecting offcuts to achieve, but they are all possible with a little patience.
Hopefully this may inspire you to pick up a handsaw and not a bin liner!

This handmade bespoke furniture can also be used as larger pan drawers or smaller top drawers. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT handmade bespoke furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP
Handmade Bespoke Furniture – Heavy Duty Runners
They come with extremely heavy duty runners which can hold up to 60kg of weight.
We particularly like the glass sides as they give a very modern feel.
You can see here as well you have the option to have a plate racking system like the one in the picture.
Here they are in black and featuring another racking system.
These are an extremely popular item and feature in almost every kitchen that we produce.
There is nothing worse than having a large corner unit that is difficult to access.
You have to get down on the floor and reach in, it’s dark and half the time you can’t see what it is your looking for.
This is normally where the old tinned food lives, or the emergency pots and pans that you’ve kept in case you break or melt (don’t laugh, I’ve done it before) an every day one!
Handmade Bespoke Furniture – Corner Drawers
This is where these handy pull out units come in.
They run on a simple mechanism and the front baskets connect to the back of the cupboard door.
When you open the door the front baskets come with it and the back baskets are pulled out by the mechanism, as you can see here. Handmade Bespoke Furniture – Style
Another pull out corner unit here.
These are great because they come out further and are extremely stylish.
The only downside with these is because of the design they won’t hold quite as much weight as the last ones, that’s not to say that they aren’t more than up to the job though, You could fill this exclusively with tins of beans and they wouldn’t come close to failing. A great handmade bespoke furniture idea.
Handmade Bespoke Furniture – Function
This pull out bin is great for a couple of reasons.
The first is the seperate colour coded bins for different kinds of rubbish, very handy for seperating out your recycling and glass from your everyday rubbish without doing what i do and leaving the recycling out on the kitchen side until i can be bothered to take it to the outside bin!
The other thing i like is just how tightly it fits into the unit, making great use of the space and allowing the bins to be as large as they can be. Simple handmade bespoke furniture idea. Another cool bin design, this time for a slightly smaller unit.
All the seperate bins in both of these pull out so that you can take the whole bin outside and not have to worry about pulling out bin liners and risking them splitting and spilling the contents all over the kitchen floor!
All of these inserts also work on slow close runners, meaning you can’t even slam them when your angry!!
These pull out baskets are perfect for fruit and veg and fully extend so that you will never find yourself having to reach far into a kitchen unit to retrieve that onion that has rolled into the back corner!

(In all honestly these should have been up at the top of the blog with the other drawers but i forgot and now can’t be bothered to move everything around).
The top two drawers here are completely internal and don’t have seperate fronts.
The bottom draw has the door fitted to it.
Stylish and pratical handmade bespoke furniture design.
Handmade Bespoke Furniture – Larder Systems
This is an example of the pull out larder systems that we use.
They work on a subframe which then attaches to runners at the top and bottom of the unit.
The baskets clip into the frame and can be moved up and down to suit.
The whole mechanism then attaches to the door and pulls out as one.
This system also works on a slow close mechanism.
So there you have it.
Nothing here is going to change the look of your kitchen.
It is not going to make it look any more or less beautiful and stylish. What these inserts will do is hugely improve the use-ability of your kitchen.
They will make the best use of the space inside of the units and offer elegant solutions for storing all manner of kitchen items. CASE STUDIES | GALLERY | REVIEWS | CONTACT handmade bespoke furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP All of these inserts are fully customisable and fall within that term that we love, bespoke. Most of them will fit into any sized unit and the pull out larders can be extended if you want to have taller units, which is a lovely feature and again makes the absolute most of the space that you have.
Also these inserts are designed to work on any style of kitchen, be it ultra-modern and featuring handleless rail and high gloss doors or a traditional shaker with full front framework.
These are all products that we use regularly and we would highly recommend any of them.
