David Head Furniture- 2011-2016 Part 1
So, i find myself in possession of a fairly free afternoon. The lads are busy in the workshop and David is asleep and so i thought i would embark on a fairly large blogging project for the day. Most of my blog posts normally come together in anything between 30 minutes to an hour. I could probably write them quicker but unfortunately the connection between my brain and fingers isn’t as sharp as it could be and i tend to type as i think, one word at a time and very slowly. Being the massive nerd that i am, i realised the other day that i have photographed a lot of the work that we have undertaken over the past five years. What i would like to do is to split that into say six parts and show you all of the pictures and a small description of each job, primarily the materials that we used and were possible the finishes as well. If nothing else this may just give you a few pretty things to look at whilst your doing more important things like going to the toilet, walking children across a busy road or operating a large piece of industrial machinery. So without further ado…. (god this is going to take me ages!). By the way if the descriptions get shorter and shorter as these posts go on then you know what has happened, I’m either running out of time and just want to go home or I’ve got so bored that i’ve just started writing ‘table’ or ‘wardrobes’ next to the relevant photo. Ok we really are going to go for it now…… Believe it or not but this is actually the office/ showroom we created when we were in Station road, Flitwick, this was made to highlight a few different handmade kitchen ideas. The wall units have solid oak panelled doors and the base units a spray painted finish. The oak worktops are made in a butcher block style with a ceramic sink.

A painted bookcase in Beaconsfield. We worked in conjunction with the builder who built the alcove in the wall specially for the bookcase. The bottom doors work on push latches and the top bookcases feature adjustable shelves. Fitted wardrobes in Gerrards cross. The doors and outside panelling all come from BA components Zurfiz range. The interiors of the wardrobes were made using a melamine faced MDF in walnut. These were scribed neatly to the sloping ceiling. There were matching wardrobes (with the angle reversed) on the opposing wall. A smart little vanity unit for a house in Harlington. The white high gloss centre post neatly hides all of the pipework and the deep oak veneer shelves cut around neatly. I feel the need to point out that this isn’t a picture showing it fitted! It does prove that despite the overhangs though, it supports its own weight! A large handmade kitchen again in Harlington, This featured a beautiful textured granite workstop with handleless rail doors in white high gloss.

A dressing room in Gerrards cross, We tried to get as much of the grain to match across the doors as possible. All the insides were made from walnut veneer as were the fronts. The octagonal dressing table in the centre is one of my favourite ever pieces. Some very neat bedroom wardrobes in Flitwick. The doors for this again came from BA components. This sort of arrangement is great for creating extra space where you may not otherwise have anything. Part of a large shaker handmade kitchen in Ampthill. All of the doors were ‘in frame’ and there were granite tops throughout. If you look closely you can see that the wall panelling and the overmantle were in a different colour.

A white high gloss utility room in Stockgrove. This features handleless rail on the base doors and draws. The wall unit doors overhang the units so that they can be opened from the bottom without handles. I particularly like the contrast between the white high gloss and the dark splashback.

A neat little walnut unit in Stockgrove. This unit also covered all the workings for the underfloor heating in the house, leaving it all accessible but neatly covered up. Again in Stockgrove, this unit was made for the gym. The whole outside is done in a white gloss on a 22mm moisture resistant MDF flat panel door. Notice that the unit is brought a little down from the ceiling to create a neat shadow gap at the top and that the plinth has been raised to give the same effect at the bottom. Another inframe handmade kitchen, this time in Emberton. The challenges here were the curved doors and also the fact that the house was a very old property. we had to build up a couple of false walls to be able to fit the wall and larder units level and also had to cut around a few beams.

A very modern handmade kitchen in Maulden. The builder was also the homeowner of this one which made getting sizes and plans much easier! This was a very effective mix of black and white high gloss BA zurfiz doors.

Back in Stockgrove again, this was a small part of the high gloss white wardrobes that we put in each of the bedrooms. This photo however is highlighting what became known as the ‘Narnia doors’. From the outside it looks like a regular wardrobe door. When you open it though it creates a walkthrough into the ensuite toilet. Ever ones to use all possible available space we put some handy shelving on the left hand side of the ensuite door! Some neat alcove shelving. These were fitted as floating shelves using some pretty industrial looking hidden brackets! If you zoom in closely you may be able to see the oak cubes that are on the shelves. These were made in various different sizes to act as bookends and even little stools. A very fiddly to make chest of draws in cherry. This was oiled to give it a slightly warmer and older look. You can see the work involved in the leg work as well as the various different beadings and mouldings that were made and used throughout. The bedside tables to go with the chest of draws, the draws themselves were made using halving joints before we routered a rebate all around the draw front and fitted a neatly curved beading. The dressing table! The longer i look at this the more i think it shouldn’t be able to supports itself and should fold in the middle! It didn’t though luckily!! A bigger picture of the wardrobes with the Narnia doors. If you look closely enough at the door on the far right you may be able to see the slight break in the plinth and top fascia where they will open, allowing access to the en suite. A very large and symmetrical atrium hallway. All made from walnut and featuring very clean glass doors at the far end (so clean that i lost count of how many times i walked straight into them). All the doors on the right and left hand side are sliding doors with the mechanisms neatly hidden behind the fascia boards and the bottom track fitted in place before the flooring. So there you go, the first 20!! only another hundred or so to go! Remember that if you see anything you like (and want!) that you can reach David at david@davidhead.co.uk or on 01525753737 see you in a bit with some more!!
