DAVID HEAD AT BA AWARDS 2015

I’m going to ruin the end of this post at the start………..We won!!!

We have been working with BA components for several years now. They provide us with bespoke doors and panels in a variety of styles and finishes. We use them primarily if we are trying to attain a certain type of finish for a customer that we cannot in our workshop.

We primarily use their products for handmade kitchens and bedrooms and order from both their Bella and Zurfiz ranges. They do some fantastic quality high gloss doors as well as more traditionally styled shaker styled doors.

The great thing about using them is that they are also a completely bespoke service and as i wrote about in my previous post. This allows us to offer our customers absolutely any size units that they may require.

We still do all of the designing and all of the carcassing and fitting but it enables us to offer so much more than is possible to be made in a small workshop environment.

Every year they have an awards ceremony, celebrating companies, like ours, who use their products with innovation and creativity to produce something fantastic. This year being their 25th anniversary made it all the more special.

HANDMADE KITCHENS BEDFORD

Mr and Mrs Cook live in Milton Keynes and contacted David about designing them a new handmade kitchen. Their house was extremely unique.

Built originally as a concept home in the 1980s with a liberal use of glass, exposed brickwork and birch interior cladding. Their handmade kitchen was split into two sections.

The first was in a large and open handmade kitchen/diner style area with the second being in a more self contained room, with a low ceiling and a lot of exposed brickwork.

The first challenge for David was to work out how to best use the space. How to best integrate the appliances, use all of the space available, and integrate the look of the handmade kitchen with the more unique qualities of the home.

After several discussions and much designing a plan began to form.

The idea was to blend the handmade kitchen into the interior by using two tones of BA Zurfiz high gloss door, in ultragloss limestone and ultragloss copper leaf.

DECTON WORKTOP

With the choice of Decton worktop, the decision to use a handleless rail system and to incorporate elements of solid birch within the design it was felt that this was the best way to achieve the desired effect.

This was Davids original rendering. You can see the use of underlighting to warm up the look of the exposed brickwork as well as use of solid birch as a raised shelf on the handmade kitchen island.

It was also decided to use a stainless steel plinth, which would match the finish of the handleless rail and give the handmade kitchen a sleek, almost industrial feel.

The finished product looked as good as anyone could have hoped for. Fitting seamlessly against the glass and exposed brickwork, the worktop, the solid birch tying together the interior panelling and the customers existing furniture.

The use of handleless rail means that the lines of the handmade kitchen are not broken up by handles, allowing the kitchen doors to look more like an extension to the wall panelling.

Again, in the admittedly slightly darker second room, we lightened up the spaced with the use of underlighting and the lighter Limestone finish door. The use of an undermounted sink allowed for the lines of the worktop to not be broken.

The exposed brickwork, painted wall, grey of the worktop and colour of the solid birch shelving made a wonderful feature of the more functional parts of the handmade kitchen.

BA NOMINATIONS

And so it came to be that we found ourselves nominated for the BA award for best kitchen costing over £15,000. David submitted all of the designs and photos of the finished handmade kitchen to BA directly.

It was wonderful when we heard that we had been selected along with four other companies as a nominee for the award that would be announced and given out at a ceremony near their base in Cookstown, Northern Ireland.

This, alas, was the point at which the first chord of disharmony within the David Head Furniture team was struck, David elected to take his wife Lisa to the event and not his eternally long suffering workshop manager, Me!!

Arguments can be made that Lisa is equally, if not much more, long suffering that me in regards to David but i was still livid! Such is my devotion to the company that i don’t think i had seen daylight for months.

Such was my commitment to producing high quality furniture from our workshop! Unfortunately, the decision was made and David and Lisa flew off to Northern Ireland.

David had practiced his gracious loser face, as if he was Leonardo DiCaprio at the oscars and we all waited to hear what had happened.

AWARD WINNERS

It was a little after 10;30 on a thursday evening when i received a picture of David, grinning like a village idiot and holding the award. So unprepared for us to win was he, that he momentarily forgot to move when his name was read out.

And here he is, looking uncharacteristically dapper, again grinning like an idiot.

Winning the award is something that we are extremely proud of, after years of hard work in improving and refining our designs, getting industry recognition to this level is just fantastic.
